Frequently Asked Questions

SPVM is the official acronym of the Samahang Pisika ng Visayas at Mindanao (The Physics Society of Southern Philippines),

The principal office of SPVM is located at the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology with the following business address:

c/o Department of Physics
MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology
Iligan City, Philippines 9200

SPVM was founded on April 21, 1995, during the First Iligan National Science Conference on Theoretical and Experimental Physics held at Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), Iligan City.

The physics community in Luzon is already represented by the Samahang Pisikang Pilipinas (SPP) and the original intent of the SPVM is to be a recognized chapter of SPP. This has not been realized but SPVM has been very active as an independent group of physics teachers, researchers and students in the South. The association is based at MSU-IIT, Iligan City. During the Iligan Conference in April 1995, although all of the speakers came from the Metro Manila, United States and Japan, all other participants came from the Visayas and Mindanao and none were from Luzon.

One can be a member by participating in the SPVM annual conference and paying the annual membership fees. According to SPVM Constitution and By-Laws, there are three types of membership: regular, associate and student. Graduates of physics, applied physics, and other physics-related degrees are classified as regular members. Those who are not graduates of the above courses but are teaching high school or college physics subjects may be accepted as associate members.

For regular and associate members: P500.00 and for students P250.00.

Lifetime membership is 20x the annual fee.

An active member is one who pays regularly his/her annual membership fees and attends at least one SPVM-sponsored activity each year; otherwise, the membership is classified as nominal. He/She is also called a member of good standing.

All members will have the right to present their research papers after qualifying the paper screening criteria and can join all SPVM-sponsored activities. However, only those members of good standing shall examine the books of SPVM. Active members gain networking access through a growing number of active professors and researchers among the current SPVM membership.

The SPVM plans to organize the annual SPVM National Physics Conferences every October each year. Regional planning conferences as well as the semestral conferences at MSU-IIT are part of the lined activities of the association. Except for the planning and Physics Workshops, these conferences are highly technical in nature and can be more appreciated by university teachers and researchers who are into serious study of physics. Printing of research journals once or twice a year that will feature research of the members is on the priority list of the association.

All SPVM activities are open for participation to all registered members.
